Cancelled the Satellite Subscription :)

I am happy to say that I cancelled my StarChoice satellite subscription yesterday. This week of testing has gone very well. On Sunday I noticed that with clear skies and good weather, that my reception was suffering. I ended up building a new temporary mount and put it higher on the peak of the roof. Reception this week has been great despite the variety of weather. I think I know now where I need to mount it permanently and am working on the how. Also this week, I managed to scoop a refurb Hauppauge HVR-1600 for $25 to use as a second tuner, so SnapStream is now able to record 2 ATSC broadcasts at the same time.

  1. Very impressive build and set up.
You mentioned that you are getting all the Buffalo channels but are you able to get any of the Toronto ones without moving the antenna?

  2. The antenna offers rock solid performance but in my experience, is quite directional. When optimally aimed at Buffalo, I don't pick up any Toronto stations. I do not have a rotor, as the antenna is attached to my SnapStream PVR.

  3. One option is to build a second GH10 for optimally aiming towards Toronto, then use a regular coax splitter to combine the signals together. (ie. attach the antennas to the 'out' and the TV to the 'in'). The signals should combine nicely without interference.

  4. Combining two antennas pointing in different directions results in a >3dB signal loss because some of the incoming signal is re-radiated out of the other antenna. Additional losses may occur depending upon the specific configuration of the antennas with respect to each other.
